Prospect Water Filtration Plant: A Case History
In 1994, River Sands was awarded the contract for the production of 18,500 tonnes of crushed quartz filter media for the Prospect Water Filtration Plan (WFP) in Sydney, Australia.
The Prospect WFP services 86% of Sydney's water system and is the biggest water treatment plant in the Southern Hemisphere. The plant contains 24 double cell, deep-bed filters and is capable of supplying up to 3000 mega litres of water per day.
The Production Challenge
The filter media had to be produced within tight grading limits, (e.g. less than 0.1% of particles with a size greater than 3.55mm), as specified by Civil & Civic and Australian Water Services. The raw material also required special preparation. Due to the large size of the job, River Sands commissioned additional production facilities to ensure the production schedule was adhered to.
Quality Assurance
A Quality Plan was established, which included inspection and testing of the raw material and production. In addition to our in-house testing, external independent testing was conducted to ensure the material met the tight specification.
Packaging
The filter media was packaged in 2.4 tonne polypropylene single trip bulk bags. During storage, protective plastic bag covers were used to safeguard the finished product from the elements.
Delivery on Time and in Good Condition
Delivery of the product had to conform to a strict timetable. In total, 770 semi-trailers were used to carry the bulk bags over the 1000 km journey to Sydney.
In conclusion, the expertise gained in supplying filtration media to Prospect WFP allows us to confidently supply similar large projects in the future.
